At least 24 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in a devastating earthquake that shook parts of Balochistan, including Sibi Harnai in Quetta.

The epicenter was reported at 3.02 pm between Wednesday and Thursday night in Harnai district of Balochistan. According to the seismological center, the quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and a depth of 15 km. The tremors were felt all over the province including Pishin Harnai Sibi Ziarat Qila Saifullah Loralai and Muslim Bagh.

More than 70 houses were also damaged in Harnai and Shahrag, while dozens of people were crushed and injured under the rubble, while the death toll is expected to rise.

Most of the dead are children. Rescue operations are still underway. Doctors and staff at the hospital have been called in on an emergency basis in view of reports of damage in and around Quetta Harnai.

PDMA, power supply to the quake-hit areas has been suspended Balochistan Home Minister Zia Langu, the critically injured have been shifted to Quetta. FC Levies and police are also involved in relief operations after the quake.

On the other hand, Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan said on social networking site Twitter that all relief operations and evacuation process were underway in Harnai. He said that medical local administration and disaster management teams have been placed on high alert and mobilized.

He further said that blood emergency aid helicopter and all other items have been packed and all departments are working in this regard.

Before magnitude 5.1 earthquake was also felt in Quetta and its adjoining areas in November 2020, which caused panic among the people.

Before in 2017 a magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook the coastal areas of Gwadar and Pasni Makran in Balochistan, leaving no casualties.
