As winter is gradually approaching, we tend to increase the consumption of various fruits, delicious soups, tasty dishes, and fish to protect ourselves from the cold. But today, my focus is on fish. There are many types of fish found in our region, including popular ones like Bama, Rahu, Gulfam, Trout, Mashahair, Silver, Singhara, and Thela.

Well, every type of fish hides numerous benefits from Allah for us, which we should take full advantage of to stay healthy and strong.

Fish contains potassium, iron, iodine, protein, vitamins A, B12, D, selenium, phosphorus, and magnesium. It contains 60% protein, 10% fat, 181% vitamin B12, 50% vitamin A, 67% selenium, 33% phosphorus, and 16% magnesium. From this, you can estimate how important fish is as food. We should eat it at least once a week, not just in winter, but throughout the year, to gain its benefits.

Even if you eat it in small quantities, make sure to eat it at least once a week.

When buying fish from the market, make sure to buy fresh fish, as stale fish can harm your health. You can identify fresh fish by a few things. First, check the fish’s eyes. If they are shiny, it is fresh. Additionally, press the fish’s body with your thumb—if a dent remains, the fish is not fresh. Also, try pulling its fins. If they come off easily, the fish is stale. Moreover, check its gills; if they are red, the fish is fresh, but if they are black, the fish is stale.

After buying the fish, you can rub it with salt, lemon, and carom seeds (ajwain) and leave it for a while. Once all the water has drained out, wash it. Then, apply spices and place the fish in the freezer for about 24 hours so the spices can fully absorb into the fish. This will enhance its taste, and eating it will be more enjoyable. Fish has very few calories, so everyone can eat it. Be sure to feed fish to your children, as it improves their memory and eyesight.
