Was born in 1948 in a village called Kandiaro in Sindh. He completed his MA in International Relations from Sindh University and initially took up a job at an agricultural bank. However, he had a deep desire to work as an actor.
Shafi Mohammad Shah’s voice had a unique sweetness, softness, and a gentle tone that carried an allure and attraction. This distinct style and tone led him to Radio Pakistan, where he began showcasing his talents as a voice artist.
After starting his journey as an artist, Shafi Mohammad Shah left his job and moved to Lahore. In Lahore’s film industry, he was introduced by the actor Mohammad Ali, who secured him a role in the film “Kora Kagaz.”
His other films included “Talaash,” “Ilzaam,” “Biwi Ho To Aisi,” “Naseebon Wali,” “Mera Insaaf,” “Muskuraahat,” “Aisa Bhi Hota Hai,” and “Ruby.” The film “Salaakhen,” directed by Shehzad Rafiq, turned out to be the last film of his career.
Around the same time, a prominent television producer, Shehzad Khalil, offered him a role in the drama “Urtay Aasman,” introducing him to television audiences. While residing in Lahore, Shafi Mohammad Shah worked in a few films before moving to Karachi.
Shafi Mohammad Shah gained nationwide fame through the TV serials “Teesra Kinara” and “Aanch.” The drama “Aanch” was especially successful, making him a beloved artist across the country.
Some of the most popular television dramas in which he acted include “Afshan,” “Aanch,” “Chand Grahan,” “Jungle,” “Daire,” “Tapish,” “Kala Pul,” “Marvi,” “Laila Majnu,” and “Mohabbat Khwab Ki Soorat.” In these dramas, Shafi Mohammad Shah brought a sense of realism to his roles, winning the hearts of viewers.
The actor also ventured into politics. He contested for a National Assembly seat in 2002 on a Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) ticket but was not successful.
In recognition of his artistic contributions, he was awarded the Best Actor Award by Pakistan Television in 1985, and the Government of Pakistan honored him with the Presidential Award for Excellence. Two years after his death, he was posthumously awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz.
In mid-2006, Shafi Mohammad Shah fell ill, and his once-robust personality rapidly declined. On November 17, 2007, the shining star who had given a new dimension to acting passed away. He was laid to rest in the Defense Society graveyard in Karachi.
